Brazzaville Senate hears government security briefing

During the 8th meeting of the Senate presidents’ conference, held ahead of the opening of the 8th ordinary session scheduled for Sunday, February 1, the government delivered a briefing on the security situation in the departments of Pool and Djoué-Léfini (Journal de Brazza).

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Senate second secretary Elisabeth Mapaha said the communication helped members of the conference better understand the efforts deployed by the government to preserve peace and stability in these two sensitive areas, without detailing operational measures (Journal de Brazza).

Pool and Djoué-Léfini: focus on peace and stability

In her remarks, Mapaha framed the discussion in terms of reassurance and continuity of public action, emphasizing that the executive remains engaged in maintaining calm in Pool and Djoué-Léfini (Journal de Brazza).

The Senate conference did not disclose specific incidents, timelines, or security indicators. Officials instead presented the message as a broad update intended to keep parliamentary leadership informed as the new legislative session begins (Journal de Brazza).

Senate agenda set: six items for the ordinary session

Beyond the security briefing, senators used the conference to prepare the agenda for the upcoming session. The upper chamber listed six matters to examine, divided between three “old” matters already on the docket and three “classic” matters linked to routine oversight (Journal de Brazza).

According to Mapaha, the “old” matters include a draft law related to the Mining Code in the Republic of Congo, a draft law creating a National Authority for Investigations and Analysis to prevent civil aviation accidents and incidents, and a proposed law on reproductive health in Congo (Journal de Brazza).

Mining code, aviation safety, reproductive health under review

The mining code file is presented as part of the Senate’s legislative workload, alongside an aviation safety-oriented authority designed to strengthen the framework for investigating and preventing accidents and incidents in civil aviation (Journal de Brazza).

The proposed law on reproductive health is also set for review, indicating that social-policy questions will share space with economic and technical reforms in the chamber’s calendar for the session (Journal de Brazza).

Oversight session: accounts, oral questions, current affairs

The three “classic” items on the agenda include the clearance of the Senate’s accounts for the 2025 financial year, oral question sessions with debates, and questions of current interest (Journal de Brazza).

Mapaha said senators are also prepared to receive additional government business during the session, depending on urgency. The statement underscores a willingness to adjust the parliamentary timetable to public priorities as they arise (Journal de Brazza).

Pierre Ngolo chairs meeting with government representatives

The ceremony and working session took place under the chairmanship of Senate President Pierre Ngolo. It brought together members of the Senate bureau, commission presidents, and several government representatives, reflecting a coordinated approach between institutions at the start of the legislative sequence (Journal de Brazza).

With both security and legislative files placed on the table, the presidents’ conference set the tone for an ordinary session that combines reassurance on stability with a packed agenda touching the economy, transport safety, and public health (Journal de Brazza).
