Pointe-Noire Port Hits 1.2M Containers: Congo Terminal Surge

by Ange Makaya

Congo Terminal sets a new throughput record in 2025

Congo Terminal says it handled 1,219,164 TEU in 2025, a level the company presents as a first: surpassing 1.2 million containers moved in a single year. The performance is being read locally as a strong signal for Pointe-Noire’s role in Congo’s trade logistics.

A milestone tied to the Môle Est expansion in Pointe-Noire

The company links the 2025 record to a major project underway at the Môle Est of the Port of Pointe-Noire. The new port platform, still under construction, is framed as the next step to support higher volumes and more fluid operations as national economic activity expands.

From 200,000 to 1.2 million: what the concession story shows

Anthony Samzun, Congo Terminal’s director general, describes the trajectory since the start of the concession in 2009 as a sharp acceleration in container handling. “Since the beginning of the concession in 2009, we have multiplied by 6 the volume of containers handled, moving from 200,000 to more than 1.2 million TEU,” he said.

A 2 million TEU ambition by 2027, anchored in new capacity

Samzun says the next target is higher still, with the company aiming for 2 million containers handled by 2027. In his account, the key lever is the commissioning of the new port platform currently being built, which is expected to unlock additional capacity and speed up turnaround times.

More than €450 million already invested at Pointe-Noire

Congo Terminal says it has invested more than €450 million at the Port of Pointe-Noire, highlighting three priorities: developing infrastructure, training staff, and purchasing advanced equipment. For the company, these investments are not only about volume, but also about building operational reliability over time.

An additional €400 million-plus to strengthen the logistics chain

Beyond the past investments, the operator says it has launched construction of the new port platform for a little more than an additional €400 million. The company presents this spending as a practical response to rising demand and as support for Congo’s broader economic momentum.

Positioning Pointe-Noire as a deep-water gateway for the sub-region

Congo Terminal says its investment program is designed to make Pointe-Noire a reference deep-water port and a transshipment platform of excellence along the southern stretch of the West African coast. The message is that scale, modern equipment, and steady upgrading can sustain competitiveness.

What the 2025 figure means for businesses and public planning

For importers, exporters, and logistics operators, a higher annual TEU figure can translate into more predictable supply chains, if capacity growth is matched by smooth operations. For public decision-makers, the stated performance and project pipeline provide a measurable basis for planning around trade corridors.
