Tshisekedi, Kagame Hail Sassou Nguesso Win

by Lucien Mabiala

In the hours that followed the announcement of provisional results, Brazzaville became the destination of a steady flow of congratulatory messages. African heads of state hurried to acknowledge Denis Sassou Nguesso’s victory in the presidential vote.

The ballots, cast on 12 and 15 March, handed the incumbent a commanding result. According to the figures made public, he secured 94.82 percent of the votes expressed, a margin that left little room for ambiguity.

A Chorus From The Sub-Region

Among the earliest voices were two notable neighbours. The presidents of the Democratic Republic of Congo and of Rwanda, Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and Paul Kagame, moved quickly to mark the occasion.

The timing carried its own meaning. Sending word so soon after the provisional tally signalled an eagerness to position bilateral ties on a warm footing with the re-elected Congolese leader.

Words From The Left Bank

From across the Congo River, Tshisekedi offered what he described as his “vives et chaleureuses félicitations” to his counterpart. The gesture, dispatched from the river’s left bank, underscored the proximity of the two capitals.

He tied the message to a wish for the country’s future. The Congolese leader’s renewed mandate, he hoped, would contribute “au progrès et au bien-être du peuple frère,” framing the relationship in familial terms.

Kigali Reaffirms The Bond

From Kigali, Kagame addressed Sassou Nguesso as his “frère,” a choice of word that set the tone for the rest of his message. He used the moment to restate the strength of relations between Rwanda and Congo.

The Rwandan president pointed toward what lies ahead rather than dwelling only on the result. He spoke of pursuing close cooperation “au service des priorités communes et de la prospérité des deux peuples,” casting the partnership as forward-looking.

A Mandate Framed By Ambition

For his part, the re-elected president has laid out his own vision for the term to come. His electoral platform carries the title “Accélérons la marche vers le développement,” a phrase that places momentum at the centre of his stated agenda.

Within that programme, regional integration figures prominently. Sassou Nguesso pledges to contribute to the economic integration of the sub-region, and of Africa more broadly, situating Congo’s path within a wider continental frame.

Reading The Early Signals

The substance of these messages remains, for now, largely a matter of tone and intention. They speak to relationships and shared aspirations rather than to concrete commitments, as such exchanges often do in the immediate aftermath of a vote.

Still, the speed and the warmth of the responses say something. In a sub-region where neighbourly relations can shift, the prompt arrival of these words from Kinshasa and Kigali offered an early read on how two key capitals intend to engage Brazzaville.

What the coming mandate will hold, beyond the language of solidarity, is a question that the platform’s promises will eventually have to answer. For the moment, the congratulations stand as the first public markers of a new political chapter (Adiac Congo, 22 March 2026).
